LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

Yesterday was the hottest day experienced in Pukekohe this summer. A general meeting of members of the Franklin Racing Club will be held in the A. and P. Society's Office on Thursday, December 16. An interesting letter in reference to the condition in which dairy cows in profit are yarded at the sales is published on page one. Voting on the Roose's park loan proposal of £4IOO, for the purchase of the park and the forming and metalling of roads . leading thereto will be taken at the Borough Council office to-morrow.

The advocacy of rating on the unimproved values in the Borough of Pukekohe, in the course of a leading article in the last issue of the "Times" has caused very great interest, and a surprising amounc of favourable comment.

The extension of the Public .Trust Office has made it necessary to open an office in this town. It has been arranged that an officer of the Department will be present on Tuesdays and Fridays, as advertised, to meet the convenience of residents in this district.

The new Lyceum management announce that, commencing on Tuesday next, December 14, they will show three programmes weekly, viz., Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. These arrangements will commence with Lionel Barrymore in "A Test of Honour." There will also be the opening chapter of the sensational serial "The Lightning Raiders," starring Pearl White. 98

A deputation from the Pukekohe Borough Council, consisting of the Mayor (Mr. C. K. Lawrie), Crs. G. Armstrong and D. Hamilton, and the town clerk (Mr. J. F. Deane) waited on the Prime Minister at Auckland on Saturday in an attempt to secure money as sanctioned under the £84,000 loan. The Premier was sympathetic towards the request, but stated that he could artange for some £3OOO odd to cover present commitments. Beyond that he would advise the council to wait, as he did not think the money market would be easier until about March, 1922. It would seem, therefore, that a policy of "mark time" will be enforced for the time being.
