One of the signs of the materialisation of the progress we have always contended is in store for Pukekohe is that a branch of the Public Trust Office has been opened here. This is the first of a list that gradually appears in a town as advancement warrants. Hamilton, for instance, is represented by many branches of Government departments, and so will Pukekohe be within a few years, provided the land is cut up, roaded and sold for building purposes, which it will not be until rating on the unimproved values makes the pace too hot for the sit-tight speculators. We .have it on good authority that if a road is put through a certain property in the heart of Pukekohe one of the biggest firms of auctioneers in New Zealand will put up a large brick building on the corner of the new block so formed. Even in King Street there are many vacant sections, and sections with ramshackle buildings on them which would be carrying large and mostly brick or concrete buildings in the near future if the rating system was a more just one. But despite removable obstacles, Pukekohe cannot be held back, though its progress may be retarded instead of accelerated by land speculators. The opening of a branch Government department is always a satisfactory sign, and we hope to see more of them established within the next few years.
