When one buys a ticket in an art union it is generally looked on a.-: gone for ever, especially where there are only three prizes. ' A little boy named Clarence P. Keppel, four years of age, living at Tuakau, was one of the lucky ones and drew second prize in a big art union recently drawn h Milton, near Dunedin. The prize is a beautiful landscape in oils (Swiss scene), by the well-known Dunedin artist, Mr. A. Ramsfall.

The balance-sheet of the Lower Waikato Returned Soldiers' Association disclosed a balance of assets over liabilities of £2O 8s 3d, but as an amount of £2l, unpaid subscrip tions due, is counted among the assets, it appears that the Lower Waikato association is scarcely solvent, because there are bound to be a number of defaulters. Every returned soldier should belong to the asso-' ciation or a branch thereof, the firsr reason being that he is morally bound to support an organisation which exists for the purpose of fighting the battles of unfortunate comrades, and the second is that no returned soldier knows whether or not he will require the support of the association in the future.
