The Times. Published on Tuesday and Friday Afternoons. Motto: Public service. TUESDAY. OCTOBER 19, 1920. WAR MEMORIAL FUND.

Circulars have been posted to borough residents inviting them to contribute towards the cost of a Pukekohe Soldiers' War Memorial, and unless we have misjudged the spirit of the people there will be a worthy re-1 sponse. There are a few who have expressed objections to the circulars, but these persons are mainly wealthy skinflints who neither fought for their country nor contrbuted .substantially towards providing tlie sinews of war—except per means of tar-free, negotiable, gilt-edged securities in the shape of wxr bonds bearing safe interest. These few may be left to their conscience, if they possess such, and—their Nemesis. The great majority of the people will doubtless subscribe willingly. It. will have been noted that the amounts stated on tthe circulars are not levied but merely invited, there being no compulsion■ to pay, and no definite amount fixed. The figures enumeerated state a minimum amount as i basis or guide, but it is to be hoped that most of the residents will give more, according to their means, than the trifling sums named in their respective circulars. The debt we owe to our soldiers is one of honour, and as such will be made a first call by anyone possessing the true instincts of a lady or gentleman, and promptly paid accordingly. The fact that returned soldiers have been circularised has been comments upor, but the War- Memorial Committee has determined, rightly, we think that returned men would have cause for grievance if they were not given an opportunity of paying a last tri. Bute to gallant comrades whose remains now lie in the graves of Gallipoli, or "where poppies grow in Flanders fields," or other resting places. Pukekohe has lagged behind many of the surrounding districts in this matter of a memorial, and it now behoves the residents to make amends by paying up, promptly and generously, preferably at the Bor ough Council olfices. before November 1 on which date a thorough canvass will be made.
