BULB AND SPRING FLOWER SHOW

A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. i The seventh annual bulb and spring ! flower show, under the auspices of i St. James' Presbyterian Church, was ' opened at the Premier Hall, Puke- ; kohe, yesterday by His Worship t.ht ! Mayor (Mr. C. K. Lawrie) in the pre . sence of a large attendance. I In declaring the show open, the j Mayor congratulated the promoters , on the line exhibition of exhibits in every class. He referred to the fine display in the cookery section, in spite of the acute shortage of sugar. The exhibits had been staged in a most effective manner, and for this the committee was deserving of special praise. The public knew little of what work there was in connexion with sufeli a show- He trusted the show would turn out a success from every point of view. It was the sixth occasion on which he had opened the show, and he was sure this year's function exceeded previous efforts.

An outstanding feature of the showwas the exhibition of daffodils. The various classes attracted large entries, and apart from this fact some magnificent blooms were in evidence. The St. James' daffodil challenge cup, a trophy valued at t5 ss, for the most points in the open classes, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, before becoming the sole property of the winner, was lifted by Mr. J. B. Bull, of Remuera, who carried off almost every prize in the section. Other strong exhibitors were Mr. W. Rosser and Mr. H. A. Marriner. The judge, Mr. J. Findlay, of Auckland, stated that the exhibits compared very favourably with anything he had seen in the Auckland Province.

The decorated section was well pattronised, and some very fine exhibits were to be seen. Both the home industrial and art and plain needlework sections were particularly strong, and some firstclass exhibits were presented. A very large section was the children's. The juveniles seem to take a greater interest in shows of this kind than previously, and a large number of the exhibits would do credit to adult exhibitors. The committee are to be complimented on

the fact of including classes for children in the schedule, this being a move in the right direction, and one which will educate the rising generation to patronise similar events

when they grow up. It not only speaks well for present events, but creates a bright outlook for shows in years to come. The various exhibits were arranged in beautiful effect on long tables practically the whole length of the hall; Mr. H. Brett, of Auckland, had on •xhibition a beautiful lot of carnations and sweet peas, while Mr. W. J. D. Sharp, of Ramarama, had a line lot of st£Vs on exhibition also. Both these, especially the carnations, attracted considerable attention. That the seventh annual exhibition exceeded previous efforts there is not the slightest doubt. The energetic

committee, with Mr. I). It. Hamilton as secretary, worked assiduously throughout, and left no stone unturned to achieve one object- the

success of the show. They have so far accomplished their object, and given a fine night a record crowd is expected this evening. The attendance yesterday and last evening constituted a record, at least the door takings revealed this fact. Particulars regarding the gilt stalls and competitions will appear in Tuesday's issue.
