NEW POSTAL TARIFF
GENERAL INCREASE OF RATES. LETTERS 2d: TELEGRAMS Is. OPERATION FROM NEXT SUNDAY An announcement has been made by the Postmaster-General of the new rates for postal and telegraphic services, to come into force on August 1.
The postal charges will be as follows, the present rates being given in parentheses: Letteis and letter-cards, inland (l'id for 4oz), 2d for 2 oz; to Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and certain other coun-, tries (Pod), 2d. Postcards, inland (ld), a lVl; late fee (Id), 2d.
Packets comprising commercial papers, books, and printed papers, pattern and sample packets, and unregistered magazines—inland (Id for first 2oz and fcjd for each additional 2oz), li-jd for each loz up to lib. Registered magazines, inland, Australia, Fiji, and certain islands in the Pacific, new rates, 2d for each copy if not exceeding Boz, and 2d for each additional Boz or fraction thereof. Newspapers, inland (Kd), Id. Fee for registration (2d), 3d.
Inland parcels (lUl), Cd for first pound. Fee for insurance of parcels: Inland (2d), Iklup to «. Privr.te letter-boxes (ill), Kl 10s per annum. Private mail bags (£2), +;2 10s per annum. Similar mcreases have been made in the rates for telegrams, the new charges being as follows: — Inland telegrams: Week days, ordinary ((id for first 12 words and %d for each additional word, plus war tax of 2d), Is for first 12 words" and Id for each additional word; urgent, double these rates. Sundays and public holidays, double the week-day rates.
The fee for the registration of code addresses is increased from 10s to Kl per annum. New rates for money orders and postal notes are as follows: Money orders by post payable in New Zealand, Id for each Kl, with a minimum of (id; payable beyond New Zealand (except in Australia and United States of America or Canada) Cd for each <-l, payable in the United States of America and Canada, 5d for each 2s. By telegraph, payable in New Zealand, the same as by post, plus a telegraph fee of Is Cd if sent by ordinary telegram or 3s if sent by urgent telegram. Payable in the United Kingdom, the same as by post, plus the cabling fee. Domestic orders, 9d each, including delivery fee. Postal notes: Up to Is Cd, Id; 3s to 15s, 2d; 20s, 3d. The amendment of the charges for telephone bureau communications and for telephone exchange connections will be announced later.
There is a reduction in the rates for money-orders payable in the United States and Canada. Owing to the appreciation of the dollar, the Department incurred heavy loss on all money-orders issued at the original rate of 3d for £l, and in December the commission was raised to (is 8d The new rate of 5d for 2s or 4s 2d for Si, is therefore a considerable reduction on the present charge. ■
