TUAKAU SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL

| TOWN HALL PROPOSED. ■ The Tuakau Fallen Soldiers' MeI mortal Committee forwarded to the j Tuakau Town Board on Tuesday ! night the following resolution passed ; at a public meeting held in the Tuaj kau Hall on Friday, July 2: "That I it be a recommendation to the Tuai kau Town Board from this meeting j that the Town Board take the mat- ! ter of the provision of a soldiers' I memorial in hand, that the form of ! such memorial be a town hall, that I the board proceed to ascertain the ! necessary data as to cost of such ! hall, and of all other details in con- ! nexion therewith, to place before a | meeting of ratepayers, with a view : J !of raising the necessary funds by j limn, and that the name of such i hall, if erected, be the Tuakau Me-' j mortal Hall.'" 'Hie clerk also read an extract Prom the Gazette giving the local authority power to raise a loan for the ; purpose of erecting a war memorial. The chairman reported on the object of the meeting, and stated that it was largely attended, and it was carried unanimously in favour of the ; erection of a hall, ; He personally ' wes certain that the'date struck to ! provide interest and sinking fund of ! the lo?n would be self-supporting i after the first year's interest had | been paid. The chairman said he saw Ino reason why the Government | ghould sot grant a subsidy towards ! the erection of a hall. He pointed out the matter to the Prime Minister when he visited the district, and Mr. Massey informed him that practically every district would be erecting a memorial, and the Government could not make fish of one and flesh of another by making straight-out graats. As the suggested hall was badly needed the Government may be induced to grant a subsidy. He referred to the fact that a town hall was badly needed, even for the board's own business. A hall would ha\e to come sooner or later. Mr. Fulton moved that the engineer be invited to meet the board at an early date to discuss the matter of a war memorial hall for Tuakau. Mr. Geraghty seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. Fulton, Pirrett, and Barnaby was set up to go into the matter of selecting a suitable site, and report to a future meeting of the board.
