PAPATOETOE.
ADDITIONS TO SCHOOL.
The attendance at the Papatoetoe Public School is rapidly increasing, and the accommodation at present is inadequate to cope with the ever-in-creasing influx of children. The Education Department have found it necessary to erect a wing to the present structure, sufficient to accommo-1 date about 250 more children. The work is progressing apace, and it is | hoped to have the structure complet- j ed at an early date. The school is considerably overcrowded at the pre- i sent time. |
Annual Tennis Ball and Presentation.
The annual ball, held under the auspices of the Papatoetoe Tennis Club.! was held on Wednesday last in the j Papatoetoe Public Hall. There was an I
exceptionally large attendance, ovei £4O being .taken at the door. Excellent dance music was supplied bj Hawthorn's Orchestra. The duties ol M's C. were capably discharged by Messrs. Wylie (2), Burnside and B. Brown. A sumptuous supper was partaken of and duly appreciated. During an interval in the proceedings, Mrs. Waters, wife of the president, Mr. F. M. Waters, presented the following prizes for events won during the year. The De Pass silver challenge cup for the men's championship singles was won by Mr. S. N. Gleeson. Mr. S. Watkins acted as run-ner-up. The cup was won twice previously'by Mr. S. Wylie, but he was defeated for the trophy this year. The combined doubles, for Mr. S. MeCullough's trophies, was won by Mrs Larsen and Mr. C. Elder." The run-ners-up, Mrs. Bryant and Mr. K. Claude, were also presented with trophies from the Tennis Club. Mr. F. M. Waters' trophy for the ladies' singles was won bv Miss Doris Bryant. Mr. S. McCullough, who acted as secretary to the Tennis Club for the past six years, has resigned. In recognition of his past faithful services the Tennis Club presented him with a silver cup as a mark of appreciation and recognition of his past services. In making the presentation at the annual ball, Mr. F. M. Waters, president, referred in glowing terms to the fine work accomplished oy Mr. McCullough in bringing the Tennis Club to its present efficient state. Messrs. A. Larsen and Roy Wylie have been appointed joint secretaries in place of Mr. McCullough.
War Memorial Subscriptions.
Up to the present time £225 has been raised for the ejection of a war memorial in memory of wldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the fight for right against might.
Personal.
Miss Sybil Oliver, who acted as post office assistant at Papatoetoe for many years, has resigned Imposition,'and has joined her parents at Netherton, Paeroa.
