PROPOSED IJY-LAW
Interesting statements were made f at a meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday night, when the question oi' a new by-law was being discussed. It was stated that the engineer and the ligh/ting committee had recommended that a new by-law should be made making it obligatory on owners of cookers, inons, or power points to register the same at the Borough office. Members started that several persons who had no meters in were merely paying a flat rate for lighting only, but were using current for other purposes. It was estimated that the electrical department we*e losing about £7O a year from Ithis leakago. It would not he wise to buy any further meters, as even the present ones would be useless when the change was made from direct to alternating current. All meters would then have to he changed. Cr. Patterson considered thmaking of the oy-law for a shoit time would cost more than the council would save the<!i>by. Cr. Daysh: What will it cost, Cr. Patterson ? Cr. Patterson: It wMI cost C-'i Is in advertising. Cr. Daysh: Yes, but seeing that it will be twelve months at least before the change of current ifmade, and it is practicable to put in meters everywhere, the council stands to lose about £7O. What is £3 4s as against 5170? The by-law as read was adopted and will come forward again one month hence.
