DISPOSAL. OF PLANT; OBJECTION BY RESIDENTS. The Waiktfto River Board recently decided to sell its plant, consisting 'of a dredge, pile driver, barges, etc., >v , which wa* pufell*i*l~for . improving the waikato River and its The reason for this action was the inability of the boardto raise money, the Government refusing to recognise board until it removed the groynes erected by djrectioifeof the Marine Department at the low*l(ifcsnd of the river. A public auction wajf" to have been held on Monday, but an objection has been raised by the ratepayers, especially those who have-Jtecently taken „up their the dJsltrict, and the sale has cancelled. They consider thai it-would be unwise to allow the plan*' to be taken out of: the district w»sn it Was urgently required. The Waikare, Otamatea and Marurua tributaries required dredging, and if the plant was disposed of there would be no chance of carrying out this work, as the machinery could not be replaced. A conleitnce was neld by ratepayers with the board's solicitor on Friday, and it was decided to withdraw the plant from sale in the meantime. A special meeting of ratepayers is to be held shortly ftt Mercer with a view to adjusting the financial problems that confront the board. It has been decided that any members who have not attended the meetings regularly are to forfeit their seats and new members will be elected in their places, so that the board can be placed on a proper footing.
