CARLTON.
VALEDICTORY FUNCTION. The Union Hall, Carlton, Pukekohe West, was the scene of much merriment on Monday night of last week, the occasion being a farewell function to Captain Thomas and Lieutenant Somerfield, officers of the Salvation Army, who have been transferred to Tauranga, and who left last week to take up their new residence. The function took the form of a social evening, interspersed with farewell speeches by Messrs. J. Foster, Armitage and W. Hill, to which the guests of the evening suitably and feelingly responded. Vocal items were rendered by Captain Thomas, Messrs. J. Foster, Mrs Adams, Mr. J. Steenson and C. Matuschka. Recitations were given by Misses V. and Cassie Porter, Jones, Steenson, Mis. Adams, Mrs. Foster and Rona Pollock, while Mr. Steenson gave a reading. Refreshments, supplied by the ladies, were partaken of, and appreciated to the fullest extent.
