MR. WILLIAM GOODFELLOW SUGGESTED.

Mr. Max D. King, of Manurewa, writes to us as follows: —

"Sir,—Now that the exigencies of war have ceased, and the embargo upon our produce has been annulled by the Government, the question of marketing our dairy output, to best advantage, is one of paramount importance to the farming community. The business in Great Britain is in a transitory stage, and if a new system is at once adopted there, no matter how unsatisfactory it might prove to be, it would be a difficult matter to make an early change. Hence it is imperative that the farmers should have the best available talent on the spot in the Old Country to lead the business on the best possible lines. To this end the general opinion is undoubtedly that in Mr. W. Goodfellow we have the man for the position. His talents comprise energy, integrity, diplomacy, and in fact all the essential busmess qualities that will make an ideal commissioner. My main point is that such an appointment will not brook delay, for the representative, whoever he may be, should proceed at once, and get in touch with the chief markets of the world. Therefore, the dairy companies' directors require to act with promptness." (While we admit that there is a good deal of sound argument in our correspondent's contentions, we also think that Mr. Goodfello.v's absence from this Dominion would be a loss, not to the dairying interests of the Auckland Province alone, but to those of the whole of the Dominion. Nevertheless, just as a Government may think it profitable to allow a valued Cabinet Minister to leave the Dominion in order to represent this country-abroad, so it might well be in the interests of dairy farmers as a body that so able a man as Mr. Goodfellow should be spared to act on their behalf at the selling end of the business.
