PAERAO-POKEHO RAILWAY.

LETTER FROM PRIME MINISTER. LINE AUTHORISED. MORE ESSENTIAL CONSTRUCTION FIRST. His Worship the Mayor of Paeroa (Mr. P. E. Brenan) has received the following from the Prime Minister (the Right Hon. W. F. Massey):— "I duly brought before the Hon. Minister for Public Works the Representations made to me at Paeroa by local bodies with reference to the Paeroa-Pokeno railway. "My colleague now states that the whole of this line has now been authorised, and sufficient trial survey work has been carried out to approximately locate its position. He promises that when officers are available a permanent location of the line will be put in hand. "My colleague regrets that it will not be possible to undertake the construction of the line until the posi-tion-with regard to the shortage of labour has been alleviated. At the present time the construction of the railway, from Waihi to Tauranga is a more urgent work than the construction 'of the Paeroa-Pokeno railway, and in the opinion of Sir William Fraser, every man available should, in the interests of the East Coast Main Trunk railway, and of the Dominion as a whole, be employed between Waihi and Tauranga."
