TUAKAU PUBLIC WORKS

Overhead Traffic Bridge £ISOO Grant for George St Mr Dynes Fulton, chairman of the Tuakau Town Board, who recently went to Wellington on matters pertaining to the welfare of the Tuakau Town District, has returned. In conversation with a Times reporter at Tuakau on Friday, Mr Fulton mentioned that he had interviewed the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. W. F. Massey, in connexion with the proposed overhead traffic bridge, over the George street crossing, a matter which has been discussed considerably of late. Mr Fulton stressed the necessity of the bridge, and urged the Premier to do all he could to have the subsidy granted. Mr Massey assurred Mr Fulton that he would endeavour to have the request acceded to.

The Minister for Public Works, Hon. W. Fraser, also received a visit from Tuakau's chief citizen, and although the Minister would not listen to Mr Fulton at first, he eaved in when Mr Fulton had finished his argument. The matter he was sent upon was one of vital importance to Tuakau and the districts of Onewhero and Pukekawa, as it was the qnestion of the completion of George street, to the Town Board's boundary, from the Catholic Church and from Pirret's corner to the Church of England corner. Mr Fulton applied for a subsidy to have the work done. The Minister said the Department's Engineer, when he inspected the work, reported very favourably upon what the Board was doing. He added that he had not seen better work done by any local body, than that pieco of work between the Church of England and the Catholic Church (better known as Madill's contract). The Engineer had said that as the Board had done excellent work it deserved assist-

ance to complete the work on the whole of the street The Minister heretofor complimented the Board on the work it was doing, and when a Board was doing such work, he considered it should be encouraged, and assisted. He pointed out to Mr Fulcon that the Department had never made a habit of making grants to Town Boards, but he had taken into consideration the fact of the Departments Engineer's report on the fine work accomplished, and the judicious manner in which the money had been spent, and he would make a straight out gr,aat of £1,500 to enable the Board to complete its work on Singh Street. Mr Fulton, on behalf of rhe Board, thanked the Minister, and added that the Board would continue to spend money judiciously, and would also continue to do good work in the Town District Mr Fulton returned to Tuakau a very happy cuizen.
