REPATRIATION.
Fi.k: a lon» time past the press of the Dominion has been freely besprinkled with the chronicling of soldiers' grievances. Auy unbiassed, even if casual observer, must admit that there are many legitimate causes of dissatisfaction. It is not that lh<- legislation pertaining to repatriation is greatly at fault : as staled by a speaker i t the banquet to returned sokliirs on Saturday night, the legislation has been conceived in a generous spirit, bin the administration is intfiicieut, and applicants are hampered by all sorts of restrictions and official red tape. In view of the industrial unrest pervading the country, the Government ought to do all that lies in its power to ensure that the existing legislation shall be admini - tered with promptitude, and vexaI tiotis delays avoided as much as possible. There can be no question about the plain fact that the J country owes a debt to returned | men in need of assistance, and ' also to 111. n depi nd ml , and 111'» e ol tin Calk n In inosl cum s. hi; ! ioi ■ i i lli'iin ni !■ what j ' ":• MiiM'-' 1 '■' 'i ;;.< it, I'll a .
the prosperity and solvency of New Zealand Is dependent on the amount of produce grown, and the volume exported, this should be a sufficient inducement in itself for the rapid and successful settlement of returned soldiers on the land. The housing problem is also a very pressing one, and cannot be shelved without incurring the danger of further aggravating the economic position. Everv dissatisfied, disgruntled man is a menace to the peace and welfare of the community, and the sooner all legitimate claims are satisfied the better it will be for the future of New Zealand.
