PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL
works Committee Report. The Works Committee, with Cr A. F. Daysh as Chairman, reported as follows: The ploughs, scoop, and grader have been used on the followng roads ; water-tables and loose metal have been graded up: Paerata road, Beddon street where required, Hilltop road in part, Queen street part. In Boundary road, behind K. Wilkinson's the water-tables have been cleaned, also the drain and culvsrt. Forty yards of scoria have been carted to McGuire's road. The Edinburgh street path ans been tarred and shelled. The path in Queen street to the school has been tarred and shelled The path in Seddon street has been tarred and shelled, and numerous other small jobs have been attended to. There are several roads yet where tha water-tables require cleaning, and this work could be gone on with in the same manner as previously mentioned. We expect scoria to arriye at more regular intervals, and, as there is a little patching work still required on several roads, for which the material ought to be on hand immediately, there is ample work in sight for the next month After having made an inspection of the roads within the Borough, we rind there is an enormous amount of work to be done before our roads are brought up to-date. The work consists of the following : - Grading, forming and metalling, also dealing with storm water, the latter being an absolute necessity' If we hope to deal effectively with stormwater this matter must be taken in hand, the whole of the work must necessarily be spread over a period of years, therefore we are of the opinion that it is essential in the interests of our borough to acquire our own quarry. The price of all materials required for road making purposes have a tendency to increase in price, the demand being greater than the supply. By having our own quarry we cou'd always have a supply of material at hand, thus avoiding this everlasting delay in the delivery of material as a present we are continually held up for supplies which must inevitably increase the cost of any work. One great advantage would be by having our own quarry we could complete any work taken in hand. To get the best results from the quarry it would be necessary to install a mechanically driven plant; by so doing the cost of providing material would be brought to the minimum, thus affecting a great saving Wo liavo not as yet decided on any particular quarry, but we think it possible to get a quarry within a reasonable distance, wo therefore !>(!■ mmend these suggestions for your favourable consideration. woKKIXfi Til); OXARfiY.
