BOWLERS' FAREWELL.
To Mr A. B. Barter. Mr A. B. Barter, a prominent citizen of Pukekohe and an enthusiastic member of the Pukekohe Bowling Club, who is shortly to take up residence in Auckland, was yesterday afternoon and evening tendered a farewell by his fellow members of the Pukekohe Bowling Club.
In the afternoon play was in* dulged in on the green and photo* graphs of the assembly were taken as also of the victorious Anzac cup teams. Afternoon tea provided by the ladies was duly appreciated. In the evening a social gathering wis held in the Masonic Hall, the seating accommodation being taxed to its utmost capacity. The President of the Club (Mr H. Bockett) was in the chair and there was a large attendance of bowlers and their friends. The first part of the proceedings took the form of a euchre tournament which was won by Mr Frank Perkins. A smoke concert followed.
Mr Bockett proposed the toast of " Our Guest" and mentioned that Mr Barter was one of the prime movers in the formation of the Club and was its first president, a position which he held for five years. He vacated the President's chair and was elected treasurer and occupied chat position for a term of two years The next duty he undertook was that of secretaiy and, added the speake*, he had like in his other positions fulfilled the duties in a thoroughly efficient manner. He (Mr Bockett) together with other members regretted the departure of such a highly esteemed and able member of the Club as Mr Barter, whose place would be hard to fill. It was mainly through Mr Barter's efforts that the Club was in such a prosperous condition. He assured Mr Barter that every member appreciated the work he had performed. Mr Eockett added that the Club at a future date intended to present Mr Barter with an enlarged reproduction of the photograph taken that day together with two insets of the Anzac Cup teams. The Club, he stated in conclusion, had decided to make Mr Barter a life member, and at a later date they would also present him with a silver plate bearing an inscription that he had been made a life member if recognition of valuable and faithful services rendered.
Messrs G. H. Armstrong, C. K. Lawrie, Ivan Motion, Frank Perkins, and Dr Wake having endorsed the President's remarks the toast was drunk with musical honours.
Upou rising to respond, Mr Barter was greeted with loud applause. He thanked them from the bottom of his heart for the very kind and enthusiastic manner in which they had assembled to bid him "good-bye" He felt he had an honour in the Club, and an honour which no one el e could take away, and that was that he was the first President, and also that he was the first to be made a life He would not be liviug very far away from Pukekohe and if at any time they required his services he would always be at the club's disposal. It was very gratifying indeed for him to know that what he had done for the welfare of the Club was so highly appreciated. Referring to the position of the Club, Mr Barter said that it started with a membership of 20 but at the present time the number of members nad reached 6G. In spite of the heavy expenditure this year he stated the Club would have a credit balance of between £25 and £3O. He thanked them for the cordial Wciy in which they had farewelled him and wished the Club success in the future (Loud applause). Other toasts honoured were " The Ladies," proposed by Mr F. Perkins; and " The Pukekohe Bowling Club," proposed by Mr Monty Wright, and responded to by Mr Laird.
