OTAHUHU.
DISTRICT HEWS.
ATHLETIC CARNIVAL The newly formed Sports Club held its first gathering last Saturday afternoon in a paddock adjoining the Star Hotel. The project is the outcome of the desire of several sporting enthusiasts of the town to provide a series of athletic races during the autumn months. At the meeting convened for the purpose of forming a committee to control the events the choice of President fell upon Mr J. Wilson, whilst the responsible position of secretary was entrusted to Mr S McConagle. The officials of the club are assisted by a body of men of the district, who have all been closely associated with sport in the past, when greater opportunities offered for successful gatherings Now that the war is over and the Otahuhu "boys" are returning in goodly numbers it is hoped by the committee to make these functions attractive and popular. It was unfortunate that on Saturday when the initial programme was entered upon there were so many counter attractions elsewhere. Consequently the number of onlookers present was not very encouragrng, in addition to which many intending competitors were also absent. Although the running track was considered good, considering the short time in which it was prepared, yet the consensus of opinion amongst those able to judge was to the effect that the environments were not cal culated to making the holding: of such sports such a success as desired. The ground is too small and being bounded on two sides by the public thoroughfare it allows spectators to view the events without adding to the gate takings. The committee would be well advised to procure a more suitable ground, which ought to be able to be obtained within the borough borders Seven events figured on the programme but owinjr to entrants not showing up only four were run off. The results were as follows : Local school boys, 50 yards handicap, D Murray Ist, C. Nicholson 2nd. Sheffield Handicap 75 yards. Final, Ellison I, Ward 2, Mitchell 3. Returned Soldiers Handicap 50 yards, McCord 1, J. Piper 2 Freezing Chamber Workers' Handicap 50 yards, D. Toomey 1, P. Cronin 2. It is the intention of the committee to hold the next gathering on Saturday, the 22nd inst. The next sitting of the Otahuhu Magistrate Court will be held on March 24th Boys between the ages af 14 and 17 years residing within two miles of th.j Otahuhu Technical School and who are not attending a primary or secondary school are notified by advertisement in this issue that attendance is compulsory at the Otahuhu Continuation Classes.
