ROAD WORKS AT TUAKAU
(To the Editor.) Sib,—ln your issue of December 27th there is a lengthy report of a meeting of ratepayers held at Tuakau and during the course of the meeting it appears that Commissioner Mungall made considerable reference to my doings be they good or ill. Newspaper reports are not always correct and it may be that some of the incorrect statements in the report are due to the reporter rather than to the person whose statements he purports to have reported. I desire the opportunity of giving in your columns a flat denial to certain statements reported, (a) I have never made " excuses" or " apology " to the Tuakau Town Board or to any of its members as to any work I have had in hand or that I have in hand, any oversight of mine having been frankly acknowledged without excuse or apology, (b) The Chairman did not in my presence endeavour " to put a motion that the Engineer's excuses be accepted.'' Outside of the report in your columns I have it on fairly good authority that insinuation was made by Commissioner Mungall that I am guilty of obtaining " secret commissions" in respect of goods forwarded me for the Board's work and " palm grease " from a contractor. If the alleged insinuation was made ,and was sufficiently clear I shall be glad if two or three leading ratepayers will intimate to me their knowledge of the matter and I will in that case take the necessary steps to protect my good name.— Yours etc., JOHN ROUTLY.
