i TUAKAU TOWN BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Tuakau Town Board was held yesterday, the members present being Messrs W. J. Deeble (chairman), W. Gubb, J. 8. Lapwood, B. Geraghty, J. M. Mungall and W. LBaraaby with the Clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper). THE INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC On the motion of the Chairman a vote of sympathy was passed with the various local families who had suffered bereavement through the influenza epidemic, the Chairman mentioning that the district was under a debt of gratitude to the many residents who had come forward to assist in fighting the scourge. The Board, on the suggestion of Mr Mungall, also passed a vote of condolence with the Chairman in the death of his wife, his son, and his sister-in-law (Nurse Dickson).
WHITE BRIDGE CONTRACT. The Board's Consulting Engineer (Mr J. Boutly) reported that the expenditure to date on the White Bridge was £605 63 lOd, the full contract price being £636. PROPERTY ACCESS. Mm Hill, of Harrisville road, applied for permission to carry out such work as would give her improved access to her property. On the motion of Mr Barnaby, seconded by Mr Mungall, consent was accorded, subject to the road being left in a satisfactory and safe condition. TOWN BOARD ELECTIONS.
The Manurewa Town Board sought support to the movement they had initiated towards asking the Government to make an alteration in the Town Boards Act, whereby instead of the biennial elections of Town Boards taking place in the month of September.they should be held immediately after the close of the financial year—namely in April The Chairman heartily supported the suggestion and Mr Gubb spoke in a similar way, pointing out that it was in every way desirable that a Board on entering office should have entire control of its funds, an outgoing Board managing things for part of the year.
A motion advocating the suggested alteration of the Act was unanimously adopted. boabd's plant. Craig w a member of the Board. \ Tuikau is gradually shaking itself free of the influeua epidemic, and in accordance with official inxtructioi a the temporary hospital is being closed as from to-day, the two patients who alone remained having been sent on to the Pukekohe hospital. We »re glad to be able to state that Mr W Mcßae Peacock, v hose condi'ion was causing anxiety earlier in the week, is now doing wt-11. At yesterday's meeting of the Tuakau Town Brnrd instructions were given to the Clerk (Mr A. H Tapper) to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy on the Board created by the death of Mr J. fl Craig, and by advertisement in thi* i»?ue it is notified that nominations will close at noon on Fri lay, the 20th inst. and that polling (if any) will take place on Friday, the 87th inst. The Chairman (Mr W. J Deebletonnounced that the state of his health made it necessary for him to take a complete rest for three months and the question, he said, had been exercising his mind whether under such circumstances he ought to retain his memberrhip of the Board. Members were unanimous in asking the Chairman not to reresign, Mr Gubb mentioning that he was certain the Board would grant Mr Deeble le.ue of absence. The Chairman, iQ reply, thauked his fellow-members for their courtesy and agreed to retain his seat. A resolution granting the Chairman three months' leave of absence was then adopted.
