MERCER.
At the Mercer Town Hall last Friday a euchre party and social were held as a farewell to Pte 0. Boose and a welcome home to Ptes. Sweeney, Hunter and Blandford. The two last named were, however, unable to attend. The first portion of the evening was given up to euchre, Miss Qillibrand winning the ladies' prize and Mr T. Hill carrying off the men's trophy. After this the floor was cleared for dancing. During the proceedings Mr Qillibrand explained the reason for the social. Alluding to Pte. Boose, Mr Qillibrand said that the fact that such a large crowd was present was a sufficient guarantee that one and all wished him God-speed and a safe return. He then handed him a wristlet watch on behalf of the Mercer residents. Pte. Boose on rising to respond was greeted with prolonged applause. In a few neat words he thanked one and all for their kindness. Pte. Blandford also expressed his appreciation of the hearty reception given him and stated that if he was fit he would not hesitate to return to the front. The singing of " For They are Jolly Good Fellows " brought this part of the programme to a close. Subsequently a dainty supper, which was handed round by the ladies of the Patriotic League was partaken of and then dancing was continued until an early hour. During the evening the Misses Higgins and Gadd rendered a pianoforte duet, while songs were given by Mrs Qillibrand, Miss Sycamore and Messrs Biordan and Taylor.
