COUNTY COCNCLL VACANCY TWO CANDIDATES NOMINATED Two candidates, viz. Mr James Keith, of Maungatawhiri and Mr C. J. Leathern, of Pokeno, aspire to the vacant seat on the Franklin County Council, caused by the resignation of Mr C. A Hille, the representative of the Mercer Riding. Both have been duly nominated and polling will take place next Friday, between the hours of 9 am. and 6 E.m. the following polling places aving been fixed, viz. County offices, Pukekohe; Pokeno Valley public hall; Maungatawhiri public hall; Town Board office, Mercer; and post office, Kaiaua. public meeting's decision As the outcome of a suggestion by a correspondent in the columns of this paper a well attended public meeting was held in the Pokeno Hall last Wednesday evening to consider the selection of a candidate Mr S. O'Leary presided and, briefly outlining the object of the meeting, called for nominations. Mr P. Kelly (Mercer) proposed and Mr James McCaw (Pokeno) seconded a resolution in favour of Mr C Leathern being asked to stand for the vacancy. Mr Leathern then briefly addressed the meeting stating that he had no previous experience on Road Boards or Councils, but he could afford the time and knew the district thoroughly, having lived all his life in it. If elected be would use his influence to see that each portion of the district got fair treatment with regard to the money available for road maintenance and making. Mr G. H. Stubbs (Mangatangi) stated tbat a Ratepayers' Association bad been formed at Mangatangi for the purpose of raising a special loan of £SOOO for improving and me'alling the road in that end of.the Riding He had been deputed to-be present at that meeting to hear the views of prospective candidates so as to make a recommendation to his Association in regard to the best man for whom to vote. . Several other speakers urged the requirements of their respective loAs an amendment, Mr E. H. Buckingham (Maungatawhiri) proposed and Mr J PendergasUPokeno) seconded that Mr James Keith should be selected as the candidate. That gentleman, they urged had a residential qualification of upwards of half a cenutry and had over 20 years' experience as the Road Board chairman. They further claimed that as Mr Keith had already been nominated and was likely to defeat Mr Leathern the expense of a contested election ought to be avoided. On a vote being taken Mr Leatham received the preference by ten votes to nine.
