OTAHUHCT BOROUGH COUNCIL. r LAST NIGHTB MEETING. At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Oouncil held tat evening there were present the Mayor (Mr A. McDonald), Crs H. J. Hall, H. J. Moffitt, R. Todd, H. V. Stringer, with the Town Olcrk (Mr W. J/Dinnison). PUS STATION mtPHONE. Mr fc. A. King, the Secretary of the Otahuhu Fire Brigade, wrote ask* ing if an extension telephone could be installed to the Fire Brigade room at the rear of the Council nfUnaa The Town Clerk having reported that an extension of the telephone from his office to the room in question was all that was required itj was decided to grant the request FXXD- FOB IMPOUNDED CATTLE. The Council's poondkeeper (Mr J. Gallagher), in a utter to the Council, applied for permission to graze unloaded cattle in the Reserve, of which the pound forms apart. His rsasoa for the application was that the priee of foaaer exceeded the charges allowed to him as pounda v Tne application was acceded to for the winter months only. AS ALLKOKD SUISANCI. Replying to the Council's letter enclosing a petition presented by ratepayers with reference to the nuisance caused by the unloading of manure at the Otahuhu Railway Station the acting Chief Health Officer, Auckland, wrote that the complaint was being enquired into. BALANCI SHUT. The Town Qlerk having reported that two tenders had been received far printing the Council's balance duet for the past year and that of the " Pukekohe Times," the lower of the two, nas accepted. QEADIHO ROAD 3. The Mavor, in drawing attention to the grading of the roads, said he was disappointed with the work done by the grader which bad been hired by the Oouncil. Operations, he said, had been carried through at a season of the year when tne roads were in a bad state and the result was-that they were in a worse state than previously. Or Moffit, as Chairman of the Works Committee, agreed that the work had been executed at an unseasonable time but as it was repre ssnted to the Committee that the Saleyards and Mangere Roads required attention first that was taken in hand but apparently more was done than was at first intended. As to the cost of the work the Town Clerk reported that it was approximately about £SO or £6O. Or Todd mentioned that the amount agreed upon had not been eueeded as £IOO had been allowed for the purpose. ' Or Stringer expressed the opinion that the grading work on Church and Hutton Sheet had been satisfsetorily carried out After some further discussion it I was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee. DBAINAQE QUESTIONS.
A report was presented by the Water and Drainage Committee on the queetion of the drainage of an area of land in the vicinity of certain propertiee in Moa Street. After an informal discussion it was decided to refer the report back to the Committee as it was considered the question of Cranage called for farther consideration by the Cooncil. BVU BOAD CEi.mi.OK.
With reference to Mrs 0. Moffat's complaint of an alleged nuisance on property adjoining her section in fiuia Boad u submitted to the Water and Drainage Committee, it wu decided to reply to Mrs Moffat that the matter was under consideration and that she would be advised of the Council's decision later. Cr Todd drew attention to the danger of a disused well at the unoccupied blacksmith's establishment at the corner of High Street and Panmure Boad. As the well was uncovered it was resolved that the Town Cleric should call on the owner to have it protected, its present state being regarded as dangerous.
PUBLIC BKBVICB COMMITTEE. Cr Stringer asked that another member should be appointed on the Public Service Committee in place of Cr dements as the Committee now only consisted of two members. Cr Hall proposed that Cfr Field should act during Cr Clements' absence and this was agreed to.
Among those reported missing from the s.s. Wimmera is Mrs Burt, the mother of Mrs J. Sutherland, of Otahuha. Mrs Burt was returning to Tasmania after having paid a visit to Mrs Sutherland. It is understood that she was anxious to return to Tasmania to see her son who since her absence had volunteered for service and was expecting to leave for the front at an early date. The Eev. J. L. The result of Westfield running its own Queen for the Bed Crow Carnival is having a stimulating effect on the activities of the Otahuhu Queen Carnival Commit'ee and the keen rivalry shown by the respective Com mittees in advancing the claims of their own district is calculated to produce a satisfactory financial remit At a meeting of the Bed Cross Oarnival Committee held last Tues-
day evening, over which the Mayor (Mr A. McDonald) presided, it was that several donations of eoal and general produce had been promised. It was decided to hold concerts every Thursday evening. A Committee was appointed to canvass the district and there is every indication that the response on the part of th« public will be encouraging. The Methodist social held in the
School Hall on Tuesday evening was crowded. Mr F. Souster presided and a well-arranged programme of vocal, instrumental and elocutionary items was submitted. Songs were rendered by Miss I. Solomoq and Messrs Wilfred, Firth and Seel and recitations by Mr Mounce (Auckland) and Mr Souster, the latter also contributing some hand-bell selections. During the evening Mr V. Stringer read the trustees' annual report, which was regarded as satisfactory. Refreshments were served by the ladies and were much appreciated. As the effect of the rough weather of Thursday night of last week the roof of a large building belonging to the Union Oil, Soap and Candle Company at Westfield was dismantled and damage waa otherwise sustained to the extent of £SOO On the Qreat South Eoad the force of the wind and rain broke the large glass window of Mr 0. Nutter's shop. Several trees and fences were also blown down in different parts of the borough.
