[To the Editor] Sir,—Kindly allow .me a little space to reply to a letter which appeared in your issue of June 11th iu connection with the above " Burning Question," signed by Hr W. Keyes. I have read the same carefully aud'the salient feature discovered is that though the " Voice is Jacob's voice, the hand is the hand of Esua." The greater portion of tie letter requires no answer, a mistake having been made of consider ing persoaalities as argument*. Nevertheless there are a few smalt points nearly concealed in a verbosity which is remarkable and with these I will briefly deal. My reading of his first letter on this subject and subsequent conclusions certainly required no stretch of imagination, simply ft knowledge of English The statement that . u counts owing for practically one year were passed on by the Committee, of which I was Chairman? is terminological inexactitude. In the second place if-" the drawing of -a ch que, which is duly honoured, do* not reduce the amount of debt, might I ask what does ? My Committee were (I think with every reason) rather proud of what they had accomplished in the shape ,of improvements to the school grounds and were in no way ashamed to.own themselves in debt, considering that thuy had real good assets in those works Further, the amount of our indebtedness was clearly explained as I have previously Stated. Mr Keyes has studiously burked all reference to his failure to give the last outgoing Committee an opportunity to prepare or consider • report to the Householders' meeting. This failure I claim to be the sole cause of the present storm in a " tea cup." ' With regard to the challenge, the Treasurer of my Committee can, and if the householders so desire, will supply a correct statement of accounts, covering the year ending 30th April 1917, on the evening ..of next election, providing Mr Keyes will deposit the sum of £5 with a responsible person to be chosen by the meeting, also that he stands to the balance sheei whioh he read to the meeting on April 22nd 1318, a copy of which I have before me signed by himself. t ■ In the meantime should this date seem too distant and Mr Keyes and his collborators feel they have, an overdue subscription to the Bed Cross Fund they may pay the same in and I will d» likewise. .. ■ Thanking you in anticipation and trusting you can give room for this letter in the next issue of 7^ ur valued paper.—l am, etc.,
