RED CROSS APPEAL.
Franklin Asked for £IO,OOO
The appeal now being made throughout Auckland province for funds to carry on the work of the Red Cross was explained by Mr C. F. Dick ford (Honorary Financial Orgarii. er to the Bed Cross) at the meeting of the Franklin County Council last Friday, when in addition to all the members of the Council there were also present the Mayor (Mr H Q. R Mason), and Mr A. B. Barter (representing the Borough Council), Messrs C. E. Lawrie (Pukekohe Patriotic Society), R M. Gillespie and U Wilson (Papakura Town Board), Or. Morgoa (Mercer Town Board), Dynes Fulton (Tuakau Town Board) and Q. P. Ewing (Whangarata). After a stirring account of the activities of the Red Cross in sonnection with the present war Mr Bickford ou line 1 a scheme of campaign to raise £ 10,000 from Franklin County. His suggestions included a proposal that a Queen Carnival should be held together with a Stock Drive, as previously referred to in these columns.
Mr Ewing said there was a good deal of ignorance existi ig in the ciuntry dihtricts as to the way in which the Rsd Cross funds were applied and as to what became of the money contributed. Many, he thought, would help if they were made acquainted with the operations of the Society. Personally, he desired information.
Mr Bickford at some length gave a history of the Society and its vast organisation and Mr Ewing expressed himself as thoroughly satisfied with Mr Bickford'a explanation. With regard to the Queen Carnival Mr Fulton expres ed disapproval of that means of raiding money while Mr Mason said from experience in the past he thought the time occupied wa9 9uch that it interfered with business
Mr Gillespie mentioned that he understood a Queen Carnivnl and Stock Drive had been agreed upon for Papakura by the Papakura Patriotic Loaguo as part of the scheme for Manuknu County. The Town Board, however, had not been consulted and ho thought that they would prefer that Papakura s-hould c prabine with Franklin County. The meeting then went iuto Committee and it was finally decided that the County should be divided int» Filings for the Red Cross appeal and that all moneys collected from date should be devoted to Franklin County's objective of £IO,OOO. It was also agreed that Hidings adjoining a Town Board distrie* could work with or without each other as desired. A recommendation was made that all patriotic organisations in the various districts sh'uld use everv effort to contribute towrrds the object in view and it was also resolved to invite the Papali ur i Town Board to combine witli Franklin County. Expressions of opinion wore averse to any project in flic fui m of Queen Carnivals othor thin i<" desiroi by any particular <:i-tii t.
