OTAHUHU

At the last meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council the Mayor (Mr A. McDonald), when the question of the making of a special sanitary rate was under discussion, referred to the injustice experienced by many of those who lived outside the sanitary area and were penalized by having to contribute towards the sanitary rate in addition to paying for the night-soil service. There were, he said about 350 people living outside the area.

Cr Stringer agreed with the sentiments expressed by the mayor and mentioned that great dissatisfaction existed among those who were not connected witn the sewer but who had to pay as he termed it "double" fees. It was, he claimed, an injustice which should be remedied. Cr Brady, who is a resident outside the sanitary area, thought that the ratepayers should not be thus penalized. Cr Held considered that owners of land beyond a certain distance from the public road should be allowed to make their own sanitary arrangements. Personally he that method, even if he had to contribute £1 a year to the Council. The subject, however, dropped without action being taken. At last Thursday's meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council the estimates for the ensuing year were submitted and after some consideration adopted. It was decided that the rate for the year ending the 31st March, 1919, should be the same as last year. The works committee submitted the following schedule of the principal road works to be undertaken by the Council during the coming year, viz: Grading, &o, on various roads in the Borough, £100; Mangere road from monument to railway crossing, coating with blue metal, £520; High • street, coating with scoria, £2O; Fairburn road, from Ot South Road to Church street, repairs with scoria, £3O; Water street, repairs with scoria, £2B; Avenue road and Gt South Boad to McMillan's Hill, repairs with scoria, £135; Panmure road to McGee's gully and opposite Mr West's properties, repairs with scoria, £35; Bepairs to retaining wall at Avenue Boad Beach, £56; Saleyards road, repairs, £75; Great South Ed from Fairburn road to Huia road, repairs, £300; the total estimated cost being £1299.
