MR AND MRS KELLY FAREWELLED

There was a large and representative gathering in the Public Hall, Pokc.no Valley, on Friday evening last on the occasion of a social farewell and dance arranged in connection with the impending departure of Mr and Mrs W. Kelly for Whakatane.

plained that they had assembled to bid farewell to Mr Kelly who had laboured for two years as Preshyterian Home Missioner and who was now leaving for a similar position at Whakatane.

During the evening a well-ar-ranged programme of vocal and instrumental music was contributed as follows: Pianoforte solo, Miss Walden ;song, "The King," Mr Bmith ; song Mrs G. M. Irving, wirh violin accompaniment by Mr Irving; song, Mrs Vaughan; song, Mrs Irviog; ♦ecitation, "The New Church Organ " Rev Vaughan; recitation, Mrs W. Kelly. Occasion was taken to present Mr and Mrs Kelly with a silver teapot and cake dish as a mark of the esteem in which they were held by their many friends during their stay at Pokeno. The Chairman, who made the presentation on behalf of the ladies of the congregation, paid a high tribute to the zeal of Mr W. Kelly and to the earnestness also shown by Mrs Kelly who had done so much for one and all in connection with the church work. He wished them in the name of the congregation every happiness in their new sphere of labour The Rev. C. A. Vaughan (Vicar) added his testimony of the good work done in the district by Mr and Mrs Kelly and made kindly allusion to their unselfish service.

Mr Kelly suitably returned thanks.

On Tuesday afternoon a fire took, place at Pokeno, the flaxtaill close to the railway lice, belonging to Mr Vincent, being burnt down and a good deal of valuable fibre being destroyed. Only the engine and a patent washer was saved. The property was not insured and the loss to the owner is estimated at about £250.
