OTAHUHU
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council takes place next Thursday. Prizes for various kinds of confectionery and produce form part of the competitions to be held in connection with next Saturday's Patriotic Carnival and entries (no entrance fees being payable) for the same will close on Friday with Mrs A. Muir, Panuiure Road, Otahuhu. Particulars are advertised in this issue.
At the Auckland Supreme Court yesterday charges of having at Otahuhu, on December 10, 1917, assaulted John A. Pickrell, so as to cause him actual bodily |harm, and of having assaulted the same person with intent to do bodily harm, were preferred against a young man, Alexander Mitchell (Mr Hall Skelton). Evidence was given that the accused violently assaulted Pickrell, with the result that the latter sustained a bruised nose, a broken rib, a cut lip, and considerable shock. The defence sought to show that Pickrell and the accused—between whom there was some ill-feeling—-were having a scuffle, when they fell over a small embankment, as a result of which Pickrell suffered the injuries. His Honour, Judge Skinner, said it was significant that one man was badly knocked about, while the other escaped unscathed? However, if the jury had any doubt as to accused's guilt, he was entitled to the benefit of it. After a short retirement, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on both counts, and the* accused was discharged. Saturday next is Otahuhu's great day! The spirit of patriotism has prompted a well organised Carnival Committee to provide a Monster Carnival when everything of an amusing and attractive nature will be provided. The first race in the children's sports starts at 10 o'clock and no less than 22 races for the youngsters have been scheduled. Then there will be 3000 Lucky Envelopes for sale at fa, the minimum prize for the same being 9d in value. Among the prices offered are a valuable section of land adjoining Auckland Harbour, a well-bred hack, together with gifts of grocery, coal, flour, and other household articles. Music will be provided by the Auckland City Band, the Ponsonby Drum and Fife Band and the Highland Pipers. Fire Brigade events too are included in the Sports Programme and as most of the Brigade teams in the Auckland area will compete for the two handsome cups to be awared the winners much interest will be displayed therein. Otahuhu will be represented by two teams and are determined to put up a big contest. Another attraction will be the baby show and judging from the latest reports some, of the finest infants in the Dominion will be on view. Ladies interested in cookery will find the- competitions worth entering for, while confectionery and produce will be shown by competitors. Under the control of the local ladies, light refreshments will be provided in a large marquee and a big attendance of ladies from a distance is anticipated. Adults' Bports, have been well catered for. There are races for married men and women and for returned soldiers, besides stockmen's bending and bottle competitions. Entries for the sports for adults will be received by the Committee up to fifteen minutes of the start of each of the following events, viz., 100 yards maiden handicap, 120 yards open handicap, 120 yards handicap (local shop and factory hands only), 100 yardahandicap (local Friendly Society members), and one mile wheel race.
