Engineer's Report. • At the meeting of the Franklin County Council on Thursday, Dec 20, thereport of the County Engineer (Mr J. F. McArthur) was presented as follows : / CONTRACTS TO LET. Contract No. 273 : For supply and delivery of 300 cy. stone Connie's Hill, Pukekohe East Road.

Willows. Contractors. Family and Co. GOVERNMENT GRANTS 1917-1918. In connection with the Government Grants entrusted to the Council for expenditure, works have been laid out and the necessary plans and specifications prepared and submitted to the Public Works Department for approval, viz. :-Beloe Road, Pukekohe West; Clark Road, Waiau ; Waiuku-Pollok Road to Te Tora Wharf ; Jamieson's Road, Ruckland ; Creamery Road, Hunua; Bombay to Paparata; Hunua to Railway Station; Opaheke Main Road ; Otaua to Aka Aka ; Pollok Post Office to Awhitu Central ; Waiuku-Drury Road. When formal authority is issued these works may be put in hand. Great South Road: A considerable length of the Great South road between Bombay and Rama Rama has been ecanified ■ up, re metalled, graded and rolled. This portion of the road was exceedingly worn and rough, but with the work done should remain in good order for some considerable time.

The traction engine and plant is at present engaged at the same class of work on the Razorback between Bombay and Pokeno. Owing to the steepness of the hills the progress made with the work is somewhat slow but should be completed by the end of the present week. The engine will then be available for hauling metal and spa wis. Crushing plant : The traction engine taken from the Mercer quarry has been overhauled and will make a start with crushing operations as soon as the necessary labour/ is available. In reply to an advertisement inserted in the newspapers several men have come forward but owing to the holidays the plant will not get into full swing till after the New Year. , x Teams plant: The plant is engaged at present forming the top portion of Pratt's hill deviation and will complete same by the end of the week. It is proposed that the teams make a start in the eatly new year forming the different roads in the Karaka district.

Works generally: Teams and men are employed in the different Sidings carting and forming up roads. Owing to the scarcity of labour it is found difficult to get on with all the necessary works as speedily as might be desired. The report was adopted and the Engineer and the respective members for the Ridings concerned were authorised to endeavour to let the contracts for which no tenders so far had been received.
