FRANKLIN COUNTY ELECTIONS.
The Results Polling took place on Wednesday in five ridings for the Franklin County elections and as a result, subject to the official recount which is in progress, the four retiring members who were opposed, viz , Messrs J. Flanagan (Drury riding), J. Henry (Mauku), R. Higginson (Waiuku), and J. A. Renall (Awhitu) all suffered defeat, their respective conquerors being Messrs W. H. Thomas. J. 8. Montgomerie, R. T. Eeid, and J. A. Short. These four gentlemen, together with Mr C. Hille who won Mr B. Lyons' late seat in the Mercer Biding as against Mr G. H. Stubbs, and Messrs T. J. Lockwood (Hunua), H. Wilcox (Pukekohe East), T. W. Woods (Pukekohe West) and W. C. Motion (Waipipi), who were all re-elected unopposed, will accordingly now constitute the Council. The annual meeting of the Council will be held on Wednesday, the 28th inst, when the business will ininclude the election, of chairman, which office was previously held by Mr J. Flanagan. The voting at the respective polling booths was as follows:
NEW MEMBERS. Mr William Henry Thomas, who succeeds Mr Flanagan as member for the Drury Riding, was born in Cornwall, England, in 1862 and came out to New Zealand in 1879. He is a farmer by occupation and is President of the Bombay branch of the Farmers' Union. Pnor to taking up his residence seven years ago at Bombay he was farming at Pakuranga and before that at Cambridge. He is no novice in local government work as whilst in Cambridge he represented the Cambridge Riding on the Waikato (Jounty Council, was chairman of the Cambridge Road Board, Chairman of the Hautapu Drainage Board and also represented the district on the Waikato Hospital Board. Further he was Chairman of the Pakuranga Road Board and at the time of the Paparata Road Board merging some two years since he was chairman of that authority. Mr James A. Short, the new member for the Awhitn Riding, is 43 years of age. For the past seven or eight years he has been farming at Waipipi, having previously lived at Awhitu. He was a member of the late Awhitu Road Board and at Waipipi he is a member of the School Committee, Bports' Committee and Hall Committee.
