Although up to the end of September the weather was a source of complaint there has been a welcome improvement since. The local rainfall for October was 1J inches below the amount for October last year whilst for the cunent month to date only one-fifth of an inch has fallen as against nearly six inches for the corresponding 15 days of last year. It is gratifying to record that in the list of country donations for last month to the L) minion Gift Fund, organised by the Women's Patriotic League, that Pukekohe takes the second place in the list with 521, the first being secured by Hamilton with 1480. This success is attributable to the excellent organisation and energies of the lady workers associated with the local branch of'the league. Entries are already coming in well for the Rose and Sweet Pea Show and Industrial Exhibition to be held in aid of the fundo of St. Andrew's Church in th-* Premier Hall, Pukekohe, on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 6th and 7th. The last day for entries is Monday, the 26th inst. Various competitions are being arranged for as attractive stage items and, as will be seen by the show advt in this issue, prizes are offered for the most original and best fancy dresses, the same to be decided by popular vo'e. The death took place on Buuday evening last after a long and painful illness of Mrs Ani ie Louisa Thompson, wife of Mr Maurice Thompson of Tuakau road, Pukekohe. The deceased lady, who was in her 40th year, only recently removed to Pukekohe with her family from Mititai, Northern Wairoa, where she was well known and highly respected. She leaves a widower, a son (now serving at the front) and daughter to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Tuesday last at the Pukekohe Cemetery, the Vicar (the Rev. J. P. Cowie) being the officiating Minister.

The Y.M C.A.'s war films entitled "Sons of the Empire" were shown at Pukekohe on Tuesday last. At the matinee in tbe afternoon nearly (300 school-children attended, viz, from the Pukekohe, Buckland, Puni, Patumahoe and Mauku schools, and in the evening there was again a crowded attendauce Speaking during the interval in the evening the Y.M.'/.A. official in charge of the films thanked Mr A. B Barter, local chairman of the Red Cross, for controlling the local ai rangements, and Mr Coady, the proprietor of the hall, for a rebate of charges allowed.

We learn that as the outcome of a leading article which appeared in our columns some months ago upon the subject of the Navy and the Navy League a branch of the League has been instituted in Sydney, Air Milson, of the Naval Hjuse, has been appointed organiser, and present appearances seem to indicate the formation of a strong bianch. It is gratifying to us to learn that another of our leading articles, which was reprinted by the Auckland branch for circulation, is also being reprinted by the Sydney branch for propaganda work.
