PAPAKURA.
I PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD. LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Papakura Town Board held lust evening there were present -.—Messrs R. M. Gillespie (chairman! P. H. Holt, T. D Campbell, W. Kichardson, W. B. Linstrom, H. Lloyd and T. H. Markwick, with the clerk (Mr Harold Wilson). NEW RAILWAY STATION. Referring to his recent interview with members of the Board the District Railway Engineer (Mr D T. Mcintosh) forwarded a plan of the proposed new railway station at Papakura. He explained that the scheme had not been definitely approved hut was fOl warded as. a basis on which any suggestions from the Board would be considered. It was decided to defer consideration of the plan eo that the wishes of the business men in the town and district could be ascertained and discussed by the Board.
SANITARY SERVICE. A number of applications were made by tenants for exemptions in respect of the sanitary service and these were all referred to the Sanitary Committee to be dealt with. Messrs S. Evans and G. Hardy attended as a deputation from the School Committee and asked that some better arrangement for the sanitary service should be provided by . the Poard as the present conditions were unsatisfactory. Mr Evans pointed out that it was de»irable to have a sanitary service provided twice a week —After some discussion the chairman assured the deputation that the health of the children would be safeguarded and remarked that he was sorry there had been any illfeeling shown in the past but better arrangements had now been made for the efficient working of the sanitary service.—On the motion of Mr Markwick the matter was referred to the Sanitary Committee with power to act. ENLARGING TOE IIISTRIOT. The Minister of In'etnal Affairs forwarded a copy of Section 40 of the Washing-up Act of last session providing for the enlargement of the boundaries of the Papakura Town Board district but pointed out that before the district could be enlarged it would be necessary for a petition to be presented praying for such alteration and describing the area to be included. The chairman reported that the petition was being prepared and the co operation of the County Council would be sought in connection with the matter. NEW IfOTEL BCIIJiING. Mr White, architect for Messrs Hancock and Co, Ltd., the proprietors of the Papakura Hotel, attended the meeting and submitted a plan and specifications of the proposed new hotel which will be of concrete foundation. The new building will consist of 10 rooms. In reply to the chairman, Mr White stated that the estimated cost of the building would be about £I2OO. Plans and specifications were left with the clerk and permission was granted by the Board for tenders to be called for the erection of the hotel.
IMPROVEMENTS TO BROADWAY. Applications were made in writing by Messrs J. Whitaker, A. W. P. Brookfield, W. Crawford and the Misses B. and M. Johnson for the footpaths in front of their promises to be tarred and sanded. On the motion of Mr Markwick it was agreed that the request should be referred to the Works Committee to be reported on at the next meeting. NEW SALE YARDS A letter in reply to a 'communication from the Board was received from Mr H. 0. Nolan, manager of the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., stating that he had written to the contractor for the new yards asking that the work should be put in hand at once. The chairman intimated that it was desirable to hurry on the removal of the sale yards as much as possible. After some informal discussion it was on the motion of Mr Markwick resolved that a deputation should wait upon the Loan and Mercantile Agency, Auckland, to urge the early removal of the sale yards.
" CALLED OX TO KESIGX.'' The Secretary of the Papakura Ratepayers' Association forwarded a petition, signed by b r >4 ratepayers, calling oh the Board to resign. He stated that the 1910 roll contained 350 names, of which 130 were not available owing to distance at which they resided out of the district, and as the highest individual number polled at the last election was 135, the number of signatures represented a controlling majority. The terms of the petition have already been published in these columns On the communication being received the chairman remarked that the host way to treat the matter in the interests of the ratepayers, of the Ratepayers' Association, and of the Board was to put it on one side. He moved that no further action should be taken and this was agreed to. SAXITARY COMMITTEE. Mr Markwick mentioned that in view of certain developments pending a report of the Sanitary Committee would be presented in a few days. MIiRARY COMMITTEE Mr P. Holt having intimated that his period of office as committopinan in connection with the Library had oxpired he was unanimously re appointed to that position and thanked for the great interest ho had shown in the work. VILLAGE OREEN. The chairman said he had been approached by ladies in the town with regard to the formation of a tennis court on the Village Greon and he was inclined to favour the proposal. Mr Markwick also supported the suggestion and pointed out that as there was some money in hand in connection with the Domain Board which could be well utilised in the
iraproTement of the Green as suggested. It was decided that the chairman should arrange to meet those interested in the formation of a tennis court with the view of carrying out some satisfactory scheme. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £63 169 3d were passed for payment.
