MANGERE ROAD BOARD A meeting of the Mangere Road Board was held on Monday evening Nov. 5, in the Mangere Public Hall. Present Messrs M. B. Kirkbride (chairman), S. D. House, E. E. Goosman, Jas. Montgomerie and W. W. Massey, with the Clerk (Mr Edgar Ashcroft). A communication was received from Messrs Harrison and Grierson, asking if the Board was prepared to accept dedication of the new road formed through Mr E. Harding's property—lt was decided that the Chairman should inspect the road prior to dedication being accepted.
Miss E. J. Brown wrote in reference to the ditch that had been constructed in front of her property on Station road. -As the matter had been before the Board .several times previously, it was decided that noth ieg further be done in the matter. The Board's carting contractors made application for an increase of 4s per day on the rate paid to them for team labour, owing to the increased cost ot feed, etc.—The application was granted. Legal opinion was received from the Board's solicitors to the effect that the Board had full power to commence quarrying on the Reserve near the Arnrata creek, as it had been vested in the Board as a Water and Quarry Reserve, by Order in Council in 1890. It was decided that a notice should he erected on the Reserve near Watts' to prevdnt persons depositing rubbish there.
It was repor'ed by the Clerk that the Railway Department had granted permission to the using of the vacant piece of land between the Onehunga end of the Mangere Bridge and the Wharf as a place for the purpose of depo.siting waste material, etc. Mrs E. .Dawson wrote giving notice that after the end of the year the rate of inteie.st on the Public Hall mortgage would be increased to ft per cent
A sum of £3O was allocated towards the repairing and improvement of the road leading to Puketutu Island, the work to be carried out under the supervision of the Board's Foreman.
It was resolved that Messrs Whyte and Wilson he informed that the Board would be willing to arbitrate between the two parties with a view to settling the Pukaki road question, providing that they both signed a legal agreement to accept the Board's decision as final.
A hearty vote of thanks was ac corded to Mr S. W House and Mr and Mrs Albert Henwood for their efforts in promoting the series of eu'hre socials on behalf of the Hall funds which had fallen very low as a result of the conditions brought on by the war Mr House handed over the sum of £.S, which would once more place the account in credit. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs J. W. Tims (Buckland road), Mr Stokes (Favona road) and Mr Brown (Mangere bridge), in regard to their respective bereavements in the recent heavy fighting. The motion was carried in silence, all members standing. Accounts amounting to £4O 7s were passed for payment.
