RED CBOSS GATHERINGS With praise worth)' zeal and enthusiasm the Manurowa branch of the Victoria League has been most prominent in its work since the very start of the war, Red Cross teas of a revenue producing nature being one of the features of its operations. On Wednesday afternoon of last week the Red Cross tea was in the hands of Mrs T. J. Corin, and despite the very wet afternoon, over 50 residents assembled in the Public Hall The building was artistically decorated with evergreens, buoting and flowers. Mr Seaton, of Papakura, gave several items, receiving encores, and Mrs Wood's songs " Spring's Awakening " and " The Valley " were capitally rendered and encored. Under the guidance of the hostess, afternoon tea was served by the Misses Jukes, Druce, Coxhead (2), Warlich, Lovell and Campbell, after which the Rev. W. C. Wood gave a brief address. The rev. gentleman stated as there now was a larger number of "our boys" on the Western Front than before, the needs would bo greater, especially in the coming winter. He urged the necessity of providing all possible comforts and he trusted the League would continue its gooi work. On behalf of Mrs Coriu he tendered thanks to the soloists fer
their services and to those present for their attendance. Before the meeting closed Mr Corin rendered in capital style "Me and Jim" and "Lloyd George's appeal to the Nation." Despite the weather the function w as a great success. In the evening Mrs Corin gave a Patriotic hall. Mrs Walters, of Papakura, provided excellent music and some oO couples took the floor. The receipts of the day amounted to over £l4.
