ALFRISTON AND BROOKBY
FAREWELL SOCIAL A farewell serial and dance was tendered to Mr Chas. Fitzpatrick and Mr John Sutton by Brookbyand Alfriston residents in the Alfriston Hall on Friday last. The guests of the evening were on final leave prior to going to the front and the very large attendance gave evidence of the very high esteem, in which they were held in by the residents. A very enjoyable evening was spent in dancing, cards and varied programme. Mr H. Moody spoke a few words of appreciation of the services rendered by both of the " boys " in many spheres of work in the district, Mr Fitzpatrick having held the position of secretary of the Patriotic League, also secretary of the Mutual Improvement Class, and secretary of the Winis club, whilst Mr Sutton had proved invaluable as assistant secretary in the carnival work. Mr Moody, on behalf of the district, presented each witli a luminous wristlet watch and soldier's companion, expressing the hope of the possibility of being able to welcome them home again before August HUH. Both Mr Fitzpatrick and Mr Sutton replied in a veiy able manner thanking all for their kindness. Mr D. A. Roid, on behalf of old friends, presented Mr Fred Hawthorn, of Ardmore, with a safety razor, as a small token of respect and gratitude for his generous help in supplying the music on patriotic occasions.
Mr Fred Hawthorn briefly returned thanks saying that the gift came as a complete surprise to him. I lancing was then indulged in to the early hours of the morning.
