BUCKLAND.
Owing to the wet weather there has been a large amount of sickness about lately, a fact that lias greatly lowered the attendance at the Public school. One of the worst sufferers has been the native family of Rut.in Wi, who lost one child. The neighbours raised a subscription to help them through the winter and also received assistance for them from the Justice Department.
The second of a seiies of socials in aid of the Soldiers' Gift Fund was held in the hall last Friday night. The following residents generously paid all expenses so that the whole takings should go to the fund, viz., Messrs A P. Home, W, Murray, J. Barber, F. McKean, and R. King. There whs a crowded house and a very enjoyable evening was spent, dancing being interspersed with songs, recitations, otc. Items were given as follows: Pianoforte duet, Misses Allan and Home; quartette (violin and piano), by Mr and Miss M. Puhnan, Mrs J. Wylie and Mr Kearney; songs by Misses Galloway, Kearney, M. Pulman, Mr Roy Johnston ; recitations by four school children ; and a reading by Miss G. Neal. After supper had been handed round and had been done full justice to dancing was continued until the early hours. This effort resulted in the sum of £5 10s being added to the funds.
Buckland s-cored a point at the annual meeting of the Dairy Association when Mr Pacey (the Managing Director) instanced the returns from a local dairy herd as being a good eiample of what can be obtained in the way of butterfat from a selected herd on a well managed farm.
