HUNUA
On Thursday, August !>oth, in tho Public Shcool a very pleasant farewell ceremony took place when Miss Pope, relieving teacher, was presented with a box of dainty embroidered handkerchiefs by Miss Celia White and Mrs Pope (tin teacher's mother} with a bottle of perfume by Miss Freda McConnell, on behalf of the school children. Mr T. J. Lockwood (School Commissioner) presided, and congratulated the children on the surprise they had given him and tho teacher in saving their pennies to make such a nice present to Miss Pope and ho sincerely hoped that her future relations with tho different people that it fell to her lot to he associated with would be as bright and useful as it had been in Hunua. Mr Hillam returned to his school duty on Monday, 3rd September. On Friday, August ;51st, in the Hunua Public Hall the Settlers' Association held a euchre social atid dance which was well attended. Ihe honours of place were secured by Miss O. Hill (ladies,, and Mr Camphell (gents. Mr Iloald, chairman of the Settlers' Association made a neat speech in presenting the winners with tho prizes. Shortly after ten o'clock the hall was cleared for dancing and the young people had a real good limp, Mr 11. Pollock acting as M.C. Miss Pope and Mr 11. McConnell supplied th" dame music. Shortly beforo supper Mr Lockwood was asked to explain what the Committee's object was in holding the euchre social and dance which lie did by pointing out that such was to celebrate the opening nf the now post oilier. Mr Lockvvood gavo the history of mail matters in Hunua from the time settlers carried it in turns up to the present, Another iiupoitant event took place at the same time, namely, Mr Joseph Md'rao «ho was on |ij. s |j n a! leave was presented hy the Soflers' Association with a pair of Military hair hriwhes. Mi Lickwomi in making tho presentation rel'errecl to the »ood ipialities ol their guest and said he Would "do his little hit,'' as the soldiers say, as faithfully as he had done his duty in Hunua iin liehail of the Hunua people he u ished him Ood speed and a sale return.
