PAPATOETOE
(See also Page 1.) . SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday last. Present, Messrs Jas Hunter (chairman), Hamilton, Haddock, Dil worth, Gladding and Scott. It was decided to put a partition in the centre of the bicycle shed dividing the boys' part from the girls'. Mr Haddock reported that he had, in company with Mr Pilworth, attended the conference of School Committees held in Newton East school and that it was decided to form a School Committee's Association, the object being to watch over the interests of School Committees and to get more direct representation on the Board, and also to recommend matters in connection with education. The general opinion of delegates was that too much homework was given the children and that in many cases it greatly impaired their health.—Mr Gladding moved, and Mr Dilworth seconded, and it was agreed that Papatoetoe should join the proposed Association, Messrs Haddock and Dilworth being appointed delegates. Mr Andrew attended and reported that the attendance still warranted another teacher, the average for the quarter being 208, which, considering the wet weather, was very satisfactory. The Secretary reported that Miss Grant, who had been absent through illn« ss, had resumed duty. A letter was received from the Manukau County Council intimating that the paddock was available at a rental of £ 1 per annum —The offer was accepted. A letter was received from the New Z >alahd Educational Institute asking the views of the committee re early closing of hotel bars but no action was taken thereon. Acc lUnts passed for payment totalled £4 2s 7d. In view of the fact that the school was losing the services of Miss Foster it was resolved that the Secretary should write to the Education Board asking that the the ablest teacher possible should be appointed in her place having regard to the large number of children that were in the classes Miss Foster had to control. A social evening under the aus pics uf the Papatoetoe Musical Society will be held in St George's Hall on Wednesday of next we k, when a collection will be made in aid of patriotic funds.
