INDIA'S HOARDED GOLD
Ot all the countries that import gold and stick it. India easily heads the list. From time immemorial wie has absorbed it as a sponge absorbs water. During the twelve years immediately preceding tho outbreak of war she received £136.000,000 in gold bullion and coins, and this has been going on, to a greater or less extent, ever since wc became responsible for the governance of the country.
And practically none f it ever comes back. It is used to make gold ornaments for Hindu women and for hoarding.
Exactly how much gold there Ls in India is largely a matter of conjecture, although all authorities a.re agreed that the sum total must be stupendous. Tho lowest estimate puts it at £800,000,000. The highest at tlireo times that amount.
