PAPATOETOE
[The Papatoetoe Agent for " 'The Times " is Mr W. J. Dilworth from whom copies of the paper may be obtained.] Mr H. Masters, contractor, of Papatoetoe, is the successful tenderer for the roading of the Puriri and Totara Estates, Manurewa. The work to be executed consists of road formation and metalling, grading, &c., the plans of the same having been recently approved by the respective local authorities, viz., the Manurewa Town and Road Boards. Some 10 or 12 me* will be engaged on the job, which will be started soon after Easter. The friends of Mr Edward Rout, late of Papatoetoe, will regret to hear of his death at "Walton-on-Thames Military Hospital England. Prior to his leaving for the front with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade Mr Rout was employed in farming pursuits with Mr P. Sutton, of the Grange, Papatoetoe. Although a native of Berkshire, England, it was his intention to return to Papatoetoe after the war and to take a farm in this district. The deepest sympathy of their many friends goes out to Mrs Rout and the other members of the family in their sad bereavement. After the poll of ratepayers taken some time ago on the subject of building a hall in Papatoetoe it was hoped by the Road Board that tho matter could be put in hand without delay and the plans for a fine up-to-date building with Council Offices were prepared. The Board have since the poll done all in their power to raise the nocessary loan to carry the project into effect but owing to the war and the shortage of money it will have to stand in abeyance for some considerable time —probably until after the conclusion of the war. Meantime entertainments and public meetings will be held in the St. John's Hall as on account of the alterations to the school that building is no longer available for such functions. The now road between Station road and Green Lane touchiug Mr Burnside's and Mrs Goodfellow's properties is now open for traffic, although not completed.' The work of putting in scoria has still to be done but Messrs Burnside Bros., the contractors, hope to have the road finished at an early date. This thoroughfare will be a great convenience to the settlers in Green Ti urn sipreviously the only outlet to their through Carruth Road. On Sunday last the annualharvest Thanksgiving Services were heldiTr St. John's Presbyterian Ohurch and despite the inclemency of the weather large congregations attended both morning and evening. The Rev. Jeffries, well-known as a social worker in the church in Auckland, conducted the services. He gave many interesting anecdotes of his work in the Police Courts and laid much stress on proper training for child life. There was an abundance of the products of Mother Earth displayed and they were subsequently sent to the Leslie Orphanage. A good sound sum of money was collected, which goes to the same deserving cause. Several anthems by the choii were much appreciated.
