EAST TAMAKI.
[The East Tamaki Agent for the " Times " is Miss Scorgie and copies of the paper may be obtained from her at the Post Office. I EAST TAMAKI ROAD BOAED MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the East Tamaki Road Board was held on Monday last when there were present Messrs A. R. Harris (chairman), T. M. Waters, H. Sharp, C. Wallace, and J. T, White, with the acting clerk (Mr D. Bell). THJE CLERK'S ILLNESS. Before commencing the business of the meeting the chairman said he felt sure he was expressing the regret of the whole Board that their clerk, Mr A. Bell, was, owing to illness, unable to be present and he asked Mr D Bell, who was acting as clerk in his father's absence, to convey to him their hope? for his speedy recovery. LABOUR AND WAGES. A circular letter was read from the Public Works Department relative to the subsidies and grants of Government money expended by local authorities and pointing out that the estimated cost of all plans submitted must be based on rates of wages not exceeding those now paid by the Government. In forwarding estimates in future it would be necessary to state what rate of wages was paid, including war bonus.
The chairman said he could not understand what this " war bonus " meant. "If a certain wage was paid (he added) why pay aibonus ?" The letter was " received." ANZAC DAY. A circular letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs respecting the commemoration of Anzac Day and the observance of such day. COUNTY ROAD. Mr Waters drew attention to the state o! the road near the English Church and Mr Nicholl's property and it was resolved that the County Council should be written to on the subject. TENDERS. Four tenders were received for cutting and tilling culvert and other road work on Rutledge's and Adamson's Roads. After considering the same it was resolved to accept Messrs Burnside Bros.' tender for the work on both these roads. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Waters having drawn attention to the unsatisfactory state of Ferguson's Road bridge it was agreed to leave the repair of the bridge in his hands. Mr White asked for some metal to repair" ta th? school and it was agreed to supply the mttal required. It was also arranged to supply metal for repairing Wallace's road and Guy's road. SURFACEMAN.
The chairman reported that in accordance with an understanding come to at a previous meeting he had interviewed a man who he thought would prove a good surfaceman for the district.
The Board agreed that a surfaceman was necessary and the chairman was empowered to make the appointment. SUTCLUTE ROAD.
The chairman reported that he considered the state of Sutclift'e road very unsatisfactory, the greater portion of the »ad being unmetalled. He did not think any good would result from extending the road unless the metalling was carried right through. Mr Waters pointed out that they had promised scoria for Messrs Blake's and Lowry's portion and he did not believe in departing from the promise made by the Board. Mr White suggested that the Board should supply what had been promised, namely ten tons of scoria and an additional five tons. Mr White's proposal was adopted. CUTTECG Or IUKZE. The chairman and other members drew attention to neglect on the part of owners in not cutting furze on their frontages. Mr Waters suggested that if this was not attended to the Board should do the work and charge the owners £1 a day. naiEOISTEKED HOGS. Mr J. SutcliHe, the ranger, reported that there were several owners of dogs who had failed to register them and on the chairman's motion the ranger was instructed to take legal proceedings against defaulters. DOMAIN BOARD. Sitting as the Domain Board the quostion of utilizing the amount standing to tho credit of the Board for the building of a cottage for the use of the Road Board's surfaceman was considered.
The chairman submitted a plan of a two-roomed cottage drawn by Mr H. C Grierson, architect. After discussion it was, on the motion of Mr Waters, resolved that the chairman should make arrangements for the building of the cottage according to the plan and particulars supplied by the architect.
Mrs Curta, an old and respected resident of East Tamaki, met with a painful accident a few days ago, having the misfortune to break her arm whilst engaged in the garden.
The special Church Service last Sunday in connection with the dedication of the organ in the Methodist Church Flat Bush was well attended. The solos by Miss Edith Galloway were well rendered as also were the selections on the organ played by Mr Trenwith. The organ is a very fiae instrument, very full in tone, and should greatly improve the services. A good collection was taken up for the organ fund.
