IA Manurewa lady, who lias written to the Lady Editor of our Fashion Column for a certain pattern to be sent her, neglected to give her name and address. She is requested to rectify the omission.—Editor. J MANUREWA TOWN BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board was held yesterday when the members present were Messrs T. J. Corin (chairman), 0. Coxhead, H. V. Burton, C. H. Lupton, with the clerk (Mr T. W. Bell). GREAT SOUTH ROAD 100TPATH. The Manukau County Council wrote stating that they were prepared to repair the Great South Road footpath as requested but they could not see their way to take over the portion of the Great South Road to the new bridge as desired by the Board. NATIONAL EITICIEN'CY, A circular letter was read from the National Efficiency Board asking for the co-operation of the Board and for a report as to what maintenance or repairs could be temporarily reduced or postponed and what workmen could be released for the purpo.-tes of the war. Information was also desired as to where women could be utilised in place of men, the object of the Efficiency Board be ng to conserve the forces of the couutiy so that the greatest possible assistance could be given to the Empire. The letter was received. MGIIT-SOIL REMOVAL. Mr H. J. Hawkins, of Paerata, wrote relative to a Night-soil Service stating he was prepared to enter into negotiations and would wait on the Board if desired.—No action was taken. TDK XEU HRiD'.E. The District Engineer of the New Zealand Railway Department, in reply to a letter from the Board, wrote stating that spoils could be taken fnr approaches to the new bridge provided no excavation was made below the formation level of railway asd that excavation was to be made only in such places as approved by the Engineer. STREET LAJll's. A letter was received from the Engineer of the Telegraph Department agreeing to the affixing of two lamps tw two telegraph poles 011 the Great South Road provided they were of sufficient height to clear vehicular traffic and that the poles wore not cut in any way, the lamp brackets to be screwed on to the foloS. It was resolved that the two lamps be affixed, one at the corner of Wey- j mouth Road and the other near the | new Station bridge. STATION' ROAD. On tko motion of the chairman, j

seconded by Mr Burton, it was resolved that the grass be removed from the footpatli on the Station Road from the Great South Rr>ad to the Boaru's bou-idary and that shingle be placed on the footpath to the width of 6 feet WEYMOUTH ROAD. Mr Lupton drew attention to the dangerous state of Weymouth Road at the entrance to the new Government Road. —On his motion, seconded by Mr Coxhead, it was resolved that the Manukau County Council should be communicated with and their attention drawn to the condiiion of the road with a request that it should be widened It was pointed out that the Board had decided to place a lamp at the spot on account of the dangerous approach to the road and the County are to be acquainted with such fact. NEW FOOTPATHS. The Works Committee reported that they had authorised the construction of a footpath on Hill Road from Great South Road to Hesker's boundary and on Claude Road from Alfriston Road to Bodle's boundary. The Committee also recommended that tenders be called for forming a footpath from Station Road to Martin Road.—The report was adopted. EI'SSELL KOAD. The Works Committee also reported that they had decided to attend to the need 9 of Russell Road as soon as the new road was formed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £lB 18s Id were passed for payment. Mr T. J. Corin, who has recently commenced business as a land agent, will shortly erect an up-to-date office on a site on the Great South Road. A general committee meeting of the Victoria League was held on Thursday last in the Public Hall when the balance sheet relating to the recent Red Cross Fete was presented by MrT. J. Corin, organising secretary. It showed that a nett profit of £IOO had been made. This sum was regarded as very satisfactory and it will be utilized for providing material for comforts to be made for wounded soldiers. On the motion of Mrs Muir, seconded by Mrs G. Coxhead, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Corin for the valuable services he rendered in bringing the Fete to such a successful i:,sue.

Although there is not much excitement in Manurewa over the forthcoming election of a member of the Town Board in place of Mr F. E. White (resigned) two candidates are in the held. Mr George Smith, who is one of the largest ratepayers in the district ard a well-known farmer, has been nominated by Mr Chas. Hawthorn and seconded by Mr H. Hungerford. He has for some years been associated with the local Anglican Church and at present holds the position of People's Warden. Mr Frank Wood, the other candidate, is a farmer and has been a settler in the district for some years. His sponsors are Messrs Henry Bull and Thos. Hill. Polling takes place next Monday.
