At the Pultekohe Magistrate's Court last Thursday a pakeha flaxmill hand, naped Donald Mclvor, was charged wjjh Laying on March 10th at Tuaksi supplied a Maori with intoxicating liquor, to wit a bottle of Schnapps, for consumption off licensed prrfpiisea. and the Maori concerned, Seqdon by name, was charged with djding and abetting in the offence. Constable Taylor deposed that he watched the defendant Mclvor purchase the echg/ipps in the Tuakau Hotel on that evening in question and heard hinu when questioned by the licensee's wife, tell her that it was for him sell and ask for it to be wrapped up ii> paper. He followed Mclvor out of-. he hotel and saw him go into the yard at the back of the hotel and givo Seddon the bottle. Mclvor informed the Magistrate that he did m t,' know the law as it was the first tipe he had been working among the Maoris. The Magistrate expressed his determination to uphold the law so as to stop liquor getting iato the hands of the Maoris for consumption off licensed premises and he fined defendant £5 and 17s costs. Upon defendant asking for time in which to find, the money, a Maori present in Court stepped forward and offered to go bond for the money being paid. Thereupon 14 days were allowed for payment. Addressing the Maori, Seddon, who pleaded guilty, His Honour humorously remarked that he had brought discredit on an honoured name. He was fined £2 and 78 costs. i _
