POKENO.
COSTLY RAILWAY JOURNEY. At the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court yesterday a flaxmill hand, named William Williamson, residing at Pokeno, was charged with having on January 4th travelled on the railway from Tuakau to Pokeno with a time-expired ticket. The facts of the case were that the defendant tendered to the guard on the train the forward portion of a return ticket from Tuakau to Pukekohe dated the previous day and which was only available on the date of issue. When asked to pay the fare, viz., 7d, defendant refused to do so. In reply to the Magistrate (Mr F. V. Frazer) the defendant said that he did not know what had become of the return half of the ticket but he denied a suggestion, which ho stated had been made to him by the stationmaster at Pukekohe, that he had picked up the portion of the ticket which he was using. Constable Taylor informed the Magistrate that at times the defendant was 3trange in his manner. The defendant was ordered to pay a line of 10s togethor with costs amounting to iiGo -Id.
