MILITARY SERVICE.

Exemption Appeals.

At the sitting of the Military Service Board in Auckland yesterday an appeal for exemption was made by John George Walker, dairy farmer, Papakura, on the ground that his two brothers were at the front and he was the only one left to manage the farm. The board adjourned the case sine die, or until one of appellant's brothers returned.

Charles William Simpson, farmer, of Pokeno, asked for exemption, his reason being that his brothers were on service and he had undertaken to look after the farm and his mother. Leave was granted until April 30. George Flvnn, fanner, of Pukekohe, was granted leave until May 15, to enable him to harvest a crop of six acres of potatoes and put his farm in order

Occupation and undue hardship were the grounds of an appeal for exemption made by Max Jonas Friedlander, farmer, of Pokeno, who was called up under Section 35. Appellant said the area of his farm was 2500 acres. Two cousins were also interested in the farm. One of them had enlisted. Appellant had one brother living in Ashburton, who had undergone an operation for appendicitis and was not expected to recover for about four months. His brother would not be able to carry on the work of the farm. Appellant had 500 bullocks, 700 sheep, and 25 horses on the farm. The land was of such a nature that if it were not continually cultivated it would revert to a wild state. The property was heavily encumbered. In view of his financial circumstances he could not entertain the idea of employing a manager. He was quite willing to go to the front if he could dispose of the property. The board granted exemption until April 30.
