AKA AKA DRAINAGE BOARD

The monthly meeting of the Aka Aka Drainage Board was held on Thursday last, when there were present: Messrs G. G. Hull man), E, T. Bout, J. N. Massev, S. P. Ilenry, A Bregmen, with the clerk, Mr W. J. King.

DRAIN CONTRACT WORK. A letter was read from Mr G. A. Pulman agreeing to accept the sum of £l2 in final settlement for his work at the western drain. Mr Bregmen reported that he had let Pulman's contract at 17s 6d per chain. —His action was approved. NAVIGATION Oii-TRO'I TED. The Waikato Shipping Co., Ltd., wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of the Aka Aka creek, and stating that the timbor and snags not having been removed caused a serious monaco to navigation. They particularly pointed out that unloss such timber and snags were removed an accidont was probable. aud a hope was expressed that the matter would bo attended to without delay. The chairman reported that he had giveu instructions to have certain remove J. He explained the nature of the obstacles roforred to. After discussion it was resolved that the Board should have all the logs and snags removed.

FENCES AND DRAINS. Mr E. T. Bent wrote stating that his fence leading to the Arrowville drain was interfered with during the cleaning of such drain he should hold the Board responsible for any damage done It was decided that a stipulation should be put in the contracts in future as contractors frequently damaged the fences. LITIGATION PENDING. Messrs Jackson, Russell, Tunks and Ostler, the Board's solicitors, wrote stating they had lodged a claim of £ISOO against the Waikato River Board for damage caused by the silting of the Board's drain.—The letter was received. KIVEK INSPECTION. A letter was read from the Under Secretary of the Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington, relative to the Board's request for the Government's Chief Drainage Engineer to make a further report on the Lower Waikato river. It was pointed out that as the engineer was at present too busy it was doubtful whether his services would be available for some time.

A draft petition was submitted by the clerk which it was proposed to have printed and signed by the ratepayers urging the Government to make a report on the Waikato and its outlets.—The draft was approved and the clerk was authorised to obtain signatures to the petition. WESTERN DRAIN. Mr Bregmen reported that ho had inspected this drain at concrete bridge and he did not consider that any benefit would accrue by taking any of the batter off. He did not recommend that any interference should with the foundation. The drain should be kept clean and the proper width. On the proposition of the chairman, seconded by Mr Massey, it was decided to leavo the matter to Mr Bregmen's discretion. Mr Bregmen was authorised to widen the western drain from the creamery to the white bridge, and cut and drag the whole to Bogue's (an approximate distance of 200 chains) for the sum of £54.

SPENCE'S DRAIN

The chairman reported an interview with Cr Higginson, who stated that he believed the Franklin County Council would be prepared to make a £ for £ subsidy towards this drain which required widening. Replying to ilr Massey, the chairman said as far as the Board's liability was concerned he thought £lO would be sufficient. On the motion of Mr Massey, seconded by Mr Bent, it was resolved that £ for £ up to £ls be spent, and that the matter be left to the chairman. MANGAWHERO CREEK. Mr Massey reported that Mr T. Douglas desired an extra set of 2ft pipes placed across Mangawhero creek near McGill's road.—On the proposition of Mr Massey, seconded by Mr Bent, the same was agreed to. Mr Henry moved, and Mr Massey seconded, that the agreement entered into by the Board with certain ratepayers on the eastern drain to pay the cost of clearing Mangawhero creek above the time allocated be rescinded as from the Bth February, 1917.—Carried. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £ll 14s lOd were passed for payment.
