TUAKAU.
The ilax season has recommenced and the whirl of the machinery at Mr B. G. Geraghty's mill, alongside the railway at Tuakau is welcomed, giving as it does some indication that the demand for flax is still great. In many places railway trucks can he seen laden with flax awaiting removal. Owing to shortage of labour, mills are working at full pressure and high prices are ruling, as much as £4O a ton being secured for good material. Some farmers are indifferent to the cutting of flax growing on their own farms and in swampy areas large blades can be seen which are allowed to remain When such good prices can be obtained this negligence to use the knife is sheer folly. • It will be gratifying news to a large circle of friends to learn that Mr A. Madill, an old and respected settler of Tuakau who has been ill for some time, has improved in health during the past few days. Among the list of volunteers for the front passed last week as fit for service appear the names of two local " boys," viz., E. Rogers and £. C. Yearbury, both of Tuakau. On the principle that competition is the soul of business the entry of Messrs Dalgety and Coy., Ltd., into the local stock auctioneering arena is an indication that the Lower "Waikato is progressing in reputation as a stock raising district. Messrs Dalgety are making Tuakau their centre of operations and are erecting their own saleyards there. Their opening sale is to take place,on Tuesday, February 6th, and already their entry for the same consists of 6000 sheep, 100 Bomnev rams and 300 head of cattle. Their resident representative is Mr Wm. Little.
