CLEVEDON.

WAIROA ROAD BOAU. MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of tha Wairna Koad Board was held yesterday at Ckvedon, when there were present: Messrs A. D. Bell, chairman, J Luke, W. Duder, J. Walßh aud J. Mc"onaughey, with the clerk, Mr A. E. B tiley. CORRESPONDENCE.

A letter was receiv d from the Minister of littrrcaS affairs, who stated that the question of vesting the control of all drains and watercourses was receiving attention. A letter was read from Messrs Jcbnsioc, Coates and Fe?, the Board's solicitor?, relative to public drains, and mention was mada that the Manukau Comity Council had passed a special order that the public drams iu the W-iiroa Koad District should be placed under the control of th 3 Wairoa Board, and that all powers granted to the Council i by "The Public Woiks Act, 1908," should be delegated to the Board. They adviasd application to the Minister, requesting the issue of an Order-iu-Council placing under the Board's control all drains and watercourses in the district. Meanwhile they advised that the Boaid should notify the occupies ot Thorp's drains that the County Council had passed the special order and the Board should request that they be cleaned.—The letter was received. WHERE ARE THE TOOLS? Some discussion took place about the Board's tools which had been lent at various timee.—On the motion of Mr Walsh, seconded by Mr Duder, it was resolved that the clerk should obtain the scoop and other tools the property uf the Board (which had bean lent out at various times and distributed around the district) and that they in future should be stored in the Board's yard. SIMPKIN'S QUARRY. The chairman reported that in conjunction with Mr Luke he had inspected this quarry at Ness Valley, but it was not large enough or suitable for the Board. They recommended that the Board should not acquire it under the- circumstances.—The recommendation was approved by the Board. UNPAID RATES. It was resolved that a penalty of ten per cent should be enforced on all unpiad rates as from the 31st January, and that notice ot the same should be advertised. DOG COLLARS. It was resolved that Mr Paton be asked to supply dog collars at the same price as last year. PIPES FOR NORTH ROAD. Mr Under asked for eight two feet concrete pip-s for North road, and two 15-incb concrete pipes to lengthen a culvert near Water's propety.—Permission was given lor these to be obtained. M ATA IT AI ROAD. Mr J. Luke said that as there was so much heavy traffic on this road be would suggest that it be repaired at an early date.—lt was resolved that quotatiocs should be obtained for 200-yards ot shingle or gravel from the Auckland Shingle Co. to be delivered at Whakatn lauding. QUARRY FOREMAN.

It was reported that Mr Peterson, foreman of tha Board's quarry, was slowly improving but was not -yet able to return to duty. NATIVE LAND RATES. Mr J. Luke moved, and Mr Duder seconded, that the Department «f Native Affairs should be written to with regard to the rates on native lands on the Mataitai section. Mr J. Luke said that certain settlers in that particular district allowed their pigs and cattle to wander and to do damage to the roads and culverts, and the least they could do was to pay rates for the upkeep of the road. The motion was agree! to. NORTH ROAD. Mr Walsh suggested that the County Council should take over this road, expressing the opinion that more money would be raised and a better road would be the result. Mr McConaugney was not in favour of the county taking it over. The chairman mentioned that undoubtedly the motor traffic during the year past had been very heavy. In time he felt sure the Koaii Huard would be merged in the county. After discussion, Mt Walsh gave notice that he would move, at the next meetiug that the county should take over the road. QUINN'S DEVIATION. Mr J. Luka enquired if anything further had besn heard with regard to this question.—The answer being in the negative, it was resolved to write Messrs Joh-.ston, Conies and Fee for further information.

The annual Su.dey S'ch oi picnic of the Anglican Church has been arranged for tomorrow (Wednesday), in the form >f an excursion to Motatapu island. The local steamer "liirere' fi«a been engased, and it is anticipated that a hrge number will avail themselves of the trip. Any surplus resulting Koes to the deserving funds of the Sunday School.

ihere has been a large number of folk camping out at> Maraetai during the holidays, but moßt ot the camps

have now broken up. At ore time there wss about a dozen tents pitched. On New Year'e Day the Fretbyterhns arranged a picnic to Maraetai. There was a big crowd present, many comina from Brookby, Ardmore and other places. But for the prompt action of Messrs J. Dow and I. Sutherland, there would have been a serious drowning cas\ It appears that one of the party, Mr McGuire, of Ardmore, who could not swim, walked into the water and suddenly get cut of his depth. Ihe rescuers dived with their clothes on and after fome difficulty brought him to the bank. Thanks to th'. help also ot the Rev. Jacobson, Presbyterian Minister, who applied artificial respiration, Mr McGuire was brought round. One noticeable feature as the result of the war is the abs nee of yachts and motor launches on the vtairoa river. At one time as many as 30 or 40 boats" could be seen but this sessjii only one or two have put in an appearance. Off to the Front: Biil Glen, who is well known throughout the district, was farewtlled on Friday last in true Clovedon fashion at "The Empire" Boardighouse, where Mr and Mtj J. Faton and family, with many friends, did all they could to ensure a pleasant evening. Among those who accepted invitations to attend were Mr and Mrs Schofield, Mr and Mrs Daw, Mr ar;d Mrs Wheeler, Miss Atkins, Mrs Gee, Messrs J. Deiiby and J. McCrae. Musical items were rendered as follows:—Mr W. Daw sang "The Song that Reached My Heart"; sorjg, "Sin?, Brethren, Sing," Mi Schofield; son?, "The Little Grey Home in ths West," Mr A. Faton, junr. Mr W. Glenn, the guest of the evening, obliged with twi songs, "Next Door to Me" and Kay Me," and also contributed some violin selections, all of which were appreciated. Mr J. Denbv sans two songs, "Tipperary" ar.d "Who's Your Lady Friend." Mrs Daw also sang impressively. The Misses Wheeler and Faton presided at the piano, and when the room was chared dicing was kept up, Mr Schofield carrying out the duties of M.C. Supper was provided by Mrs Paton, and Mr Schofield, in a fitting speech, spoke of "Bill's" good qualities. All joined heartily in singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," dancing keeping the company in high spirits until midnight. Mr left on Monday tor Trentham.
