PAPAKURA.

(See also page 4 ) SALE YARDS BEMOYAL

At the meeting yesterday of the Papakura Town Board the Chairman (Mr R. M. Gillespie) submitted the following report in connection with the proposed removal of the saleyards, viz: I regret having to report that the Methodist Church Trustees have declined to cancel the N.Z. Loan Co's. lease of these yards. The reason given that it will be mofe profitable to cut up after the expiration of the present lease than now. The company has 31 years to run at £2O per annum, rental. The Loan Company's manager and the Company's inspector from Wellington visited the yards and the proposed site for the new yards, and went into the matter carefully. Later I di cussed the matter with Mr Bodle, and the result of the interview is as lollows:—In deference to the wishes of the Papakura residents, the Loan Company will remove their yards to their freehold property at the earliest possible date, on the understanding that this Board use its influence to have Wellington street opened without delay. The date of the opening of the new yards will depend on the opening of Wellington street. I wish to place on record that certain influences have been at work to prevent this matter being settled amicably. The wise discretion of the Company's manager, and his generous and open treatment ot this Board's representative have made possible that which the majority of the Papakura re3ldenta have aßked for since 1912. After some friction between members and Mr T. L). Campbell, similar to that at the previous meeting on the subject, the chairman tersely stated that the yards would be removed as seven residents of Papakura had guaranteed the amount of rental for which the Company was responsible to the Chuich Trustees. He added that he had given the Company an assurance that the Board would, assist bv way of urging the Franklin County Council to open Wellington street.
