SCHOOL PATRIOTIC CONCERT

A school concert waß held in the Hunua Hall on Friday last, December Ist, on behalf of the Navy Relief Fund. A splendid programme was presented, and the various items met with merited applause from the large audience assembled. Ihe children took their respective parts in a very capable manner. A very pretty tairy song and dance brought the first half of the programme to a fairies were Misses M. McLonnel. F McConr.el, D. McConnel, M. Heald, J. Taylor, C. White and A. Mcintosh. What proved, however, to he the "star" item was "The Awkward Squad" by the boys. Ibis showed the difficulties of a dtill sergeant (Alan Stewart) iu drilling bis squad, l'he boys were dressed up for the occasion, their —m

medals. The whol* sketch was well presented and well received by the audience who vociftrrusly demanded 8n encore.. Mr* Hillam presided at the piano. Supper was provided by the ladies, and then dancing was indulged 111 until an early hour in the morning, Mr W. Hirst acting as M.C. and Mr H. McGonnel supplying the music on the piano. The effort will result in about £8 being sent for the above-named worthy object.

j The store which bo recently opened in the district is to close again. This is considered a backward step fur the district. However, strong hopes are entertained thit it will soon upen again. Mr and Mrs Earl, who have be:n iD occupation of 'he store, are proceeding to Matamata during the latter part of this week, where a much larger business has been procured. We wish them all success in their new venture. Mr A. Martin, who for some time has been farming down here, has so'd out. There is some duubt as yet as to who the new occupant will be. Mr Martin has made many friends during his residence here, and these friends have decided to hold fi farewell social in the church on triday, Bth inst. Mr Martin has volunteered and proceeds to Trenthim early in January.
